Divisional Coordinator of Bannu

Zahid Iqbal Khatak

Mr. Zahid Iqbal Khatak, Director, Agricultural Research Station Serai Naurang, in his capacity as ARM Divisional Coordinator Bannu Division. He highlighted the importance of agriculture in Pakistan in conversation with president ARM, he said Pakistan is in fact fundamentally an agricultural country, where a large proportion of the population is directly or indirectly dependent on this sector for livelihood. Mr. Zahid said that the country is blessed with diverse agro-ecological zones, enabling the production of a wide range of crops, fruits, and vegetables. This sector plays a vital role in national food security and contributes significantly to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP). However, despite this potential, our agricultural productivity remains comparatively low when measured against developed agricultural nations. Key constraints include limited adoption of modern technologies, water scarcity, climate change impacts, poor-quality seed, pest and disease pressures, and weak market linkages. He suggested that these challenges must transition towards smart agriculture by integrating modern technologies, promoting climate-resilient farming systems, and encouraging the use of high-yielding, drought-tolerant, and disease-resistant varieties. Strengthening extension services, educating farmers, improving input supply systems, and developing efficient local markets are equally essential. Furthermore, enhanced coordination among stakeholders including researchers, policymakers, and farmers will ensure sustainable agricultural growth. With collective efforts, we can enhance productivity, ensure food security, and uplift the farming community.
